Okpebholo Vows to Strengthen APC in Edo Amid Surge of Defectors

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has pledged to reinforce the structure of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, following a wave of defections from rival political parties ahead of the forthcoming Edo Central senatorial by-election.
Speaking during his campaign tour of Ogwa, Ujogba (wards 1 and 2) and Illeh (ward 10) in Esan West Local Government Area, Okpebholo said the APC had witnessed a remarkable surge in membership, surpassing its previous numbers. He assured party faithful that a strategic restructuring would be undertaken to accommodate and integrate the new members effectively.
“We must redefine and reposition our party to harness this momentum. I will convene a meeting of all defectors to ensure their smooth integration and active participation in strengthening our grassroots,” the governor stated.
The governor, who was in the area to drum up support for APC’s candidate in the August 16 Edo Central senatorial by-election, Joe Ikpea, expressed optimism that the growing membership base would give the party a decisive edge in upcoming elections.
Governor Okpebholo was accompanied on the tour by key party leaders, including Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, Edo Central senatorial leader, Gen. Cecil Isekhaigbe (rtd), and State Deputy Chairman, Sylvester Aigboboh.
The APC in Edo has been experiencing a steady flow of defectors in recent weeks, a development analysts say could reshape the political landscape in the state ahead of 2027.
