Tanker Explosion on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway: Two Injured, Multiple Vehicles Burnt.

Tragedy struck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway yesterday, June 11, as a full loaded fuel tanker exploded, leaving two people injured and several vehicles engulfed in flames.

The incident occurred at the NASFAT axis of the expressway when the tanker, heavily loaded with petroleum products, lost control and overturned, triggering a massive explosion. The resulting inferno quickly spread, consuming six vehicles — including four trucks, a commercial bus, and a Toyota Camry.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, stated that the injured victims were immediately rushed to Olabisi Onabanjo Teaching Hospital, Shagamu, for urgent medical attention.

Emergency response teams, including firefighters, traffic officers, and medical personnel, swiftly arrived at the scene to contain the blaze and prevent further casualties. Authorities have since cleared the affected portion of the expressway to restore the flow of traffic.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution when driving along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, especially as investigations into the cause of the accident continue.

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a critical transportation artery connecting Nigeria’s commercial hub to the southwestern region, has witnessed a series of fatal accidents in recent years, often involving heavy-duty vehicles carrying combustible materials.

Authorities have once again called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations to avert similar tragedies in the future.
