Tension in Abia as Soldier Killed After Kanu’s Life Sentence; Ex-Minister Osita Chidoka Calls for Calm
Tension has continued to rise across the South-East following the killing of a Nigerian soldier in Aba, Abia State—an incident that occurred just a day after the Federal High Court in Abuja convicted and sentenced the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to life imprisonment for terrorism.
Akahi News learnt that the soldier, identified as Lance Corporal David, was attacked and murdered last Friday in his family home on Ngwa Road, Aba.

Soldier Murdered While on Pass at Family Home
Military sources confirmed that the soldier, belonging to the 20NA intake, had travelled to Aba while on pass and sick leave.
He was reportedly at his father’s house around 2pm when unknown gunmen stormed the premises and killed him.
A senior military source told Akahi News that the attack happened just a day after Kanu’s sentencing, raising security concerns within the armed forces.
Another source warned:
“Personnel on pass must remain vigilant. Do not sleep carelessly or move unnecessarily. Those travelling to the East should be cautious and avoid trusting even familiar environments. Safety must come first.”
Kanu’s Conviction Sparks Outrage Across South-East
Last Thursday, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, found Kanu guilty on all seven terrorism-related charges preferred against him and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
The judgment has triggered widespread condemnation and heightened tension in the region, where sympathy for Kanu remains strong.
Communities have reported unease as incidents of kidnapping, attacks on security agents, and destruction of public facilities continue to rise.
Osita Chidoka Appeals for Calm and Peaceful Engagement
Amid the escalating tension, former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka, has issued a public appeal urging residents—especially young people and IPOB sympathisers—to remain calm.
In a statement shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account and monitored by Akahi News, Chidoka described Kanu’s conviction as “a moment of deep emotion for many in the Southeast and across the country.”
He added that he chose to wait and reflect before speaking because:
“Moments like this demand calm thinking and careful consideration.”
Chidoka cautioned against violent reactions, stressing that unrest would only worsen the region’s situation.
According to him:
“Violence will not advance our collective cause; it will only multiply our losses. I ask you to trust that pathways to resolution will be fully explored.”
Rising Insecurity Heightens Concerns
The killing of Lance Corporal David adds to a long list of violent incidents recorded in the South-East in recent times.
Gunmen have repeatedly targeted security agents, government officials, and civilians—often carrying out abductions, extortion, and attacks on public institutions.
Although the Federal Government has consistently accused IPOB and its militant wing of orchestrating these attacks, the group has repeatedly denied involvement.
Security agencies have since intensified patrols and surveillance across Abia, Imo, Anambra, Enugu, and Ebonyi states.
Calls for Restraint Amid Growing Tension
Community leaders, civil society organisations, and security experts have joined Chidoka in urging residents not to take actions that could escalate the already fragile situation.
Akahi News gathered that the military has also strengthened internal advisories, warning its personnel to adopt stricter safety measures during travel, especially when visiting home communities.
As developments continue to unfold, authorities are expected to release further information regarding both the murder investigation and broader security responses.
