Tension in Jos as Allegedly Drunk Police Officer Is Disarmed at GSM Centre in Hamaz
Mild tension reportedly gripped part of Hamaz area in Jos, Plateau State, after a Nigerian police officer who was said to be behaving strangely and appearing visibly intoxicated at a GSM centre was disarmed by Nigerian soldiers in an effort to prevent a possible accidental discharge of his weapon.
Akahi News gathered that the incident occurred at a popular GSM and phone-repair hub where residents and business owners had gone about their normal activities before the officer’s unusual behaviour attracted attention. Eye-witnesses described his movements as unstable and his speech disorganised, sparking fear among those present at the centre.

According to reports from individuals at the scene, concerned citizens alerted nearby military personnel after noticing that the officer, who was armed, was acting in a manner considered unsafe in a public space.
Soldiers Step In to Prevent Possible Tragedy
In what many described as a timely intervention, Nigerian soldiers reportedly approached the officer calmly and disarmed him without the use of force. Akahi News learnt that the action was taken purely as a preventive measure to avoid any accidental discharge that could have endangered lives and property.
The soldiers were said to have secured the firearm immediately and moved the officer away from the crowded area. Their swift response allegedly prevented panic from escalating and restored calm within minutes.
Some bystanders commended the soldiers for acting with restraint and professionalism, noting that the situation could have taken a dangerous turn if not handled carefully.
Public Raises Concern Over Discipline and Firearms Control
The incident has sparked conversations about discipline, mental alertness, and the responsible handling of firearms among security personnel deployed in civil communities. Residents of the Hamaz area expressed worries over the possibility of armed officers appearing in public while allegedly under the influence of alcohol or any other substance.
Akahi News learnt that several shop owners temporarily shut their stores during the brief tension, while others moved away from the area with customers for safety.
Human rights observers and community leaders have once again called for stricter monitoring of armed personnel, regular psychological evaluations, and enforcement of disciplinary standards to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Awaiting Official Comment from Police Authorities
As at the time of filing this report, the Plateau State Police Command has not released an official statement regarding the identity or status of the officer involved or whether an internal investigation has been launched.
Akahi News gathered that residents and business operators now expect transparency and accountability from the appropriate authorities to reassure the public and reinforce confidence in security institutions.
The situation in Hamaz remains calm, with normal activities gradually returning to the GSM centre as citizens continue to hope that lessons will be learnt from the incident.
