Residents of Naledi Extension in Soweto are mobilizing to close spaza shops run by foreign nationals following the tragic deaths of five children, aged six to nine, who consumed unsafe snacks from a local shop. On October 8, shop owners were forced to vacate as community members expressed their frustration over perceived government inaction.

Dineo Lebethe, a member of Operation Dudula, voiced concerns about undocumented foreign nationals operating in the area. “This is the second time an incident like this has happened. We want these people to take their things and go, never to come back to Naledi,” she stated, emphasizing the belief that locals gain nothing from these businesses while foreigners exploit the situation.
