Thousands of UK Junior Doctors Embark on Five-Day Strike Over Pay Dispute

Healthcare services across the United Kingdom faced fresh disruption on Friday as thousands of junior doctors launched a five-day nationwide strike following the collapse of negotiations with the Labour government over pay restoration.

The strike, led by resident doctors—those below the rank of consultant—was staged outside major hospitals in cities including London, Manchester, Birmingham, and Glasgow. It marks one of the longest industrial actions by medical professionals in recent UK history and adds mounting pressure to the National Health Service (NHS), which is already grappling with staff shortages and treatment backlogs.

Talks between junior doctors and government officials broke down late on Thursday, just hours before the scheduled strike. The doctors had previously accepted a 22.3 per cent pay increase spread over two years, agreed upon shortly after the Labour Party took office under Prime Minister Keir Starmer in September.

However, junior doctors say the offer falls short of addressing what they describe as a “chronic pay erosion” dating back to 2008. According to the British Medical Association (BMA), junior doctors’ earnings have declined by more than 21 per cent in real terms over the past two decades.

“We have been left with no choice,” said one striking doctor outside St Thomas’ Hospital in London. “What we’re asking for is fair and reflects the value we bring to patient care every day.”

The Department of Health and Social Care expressed disappointment over the renewed walkout, calling on junior doctors to return to the negotiating table to avoid further disruption to NHS services. Health Secretary Wes Streeting said the government remains committed to dialogue but warned that ongoing strikes threaten patient safety and healthcare delivery.

The five-day strike is expected to cause widespread delays to appointments and elective surgeries, with NHS Trusts across the country issuing advisories for patients to expect disruptions and rescheduling.

As the standoff continues, the broader debate over NHS funding, working conditions, and long-term pay reforms remains at the forefront of Britain’s political agenda.
