Tinubu Appoints Prof Segun Aina as New JAMB Registrar
President Bola Tinubu has named Professor Segun Aina as the next Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. Akahi News learnt that Aina will succeed Professor Ishaq Oloyede when his tenure ends on July 31, 2026.
It is not a child’s play to hand over Nigeria’s largest examination body to a 39-year-old academic. But when will younger technocrats be trusted to lead critical institutions? The Presidency says Aina’s track record in digital infrastructure makes him fit for the job.

Who Is Professor Segun Aina
Akahi News gathered that Aina is a Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. He will turn 40 in July and is set to become the youngest registrar in JAMB’s history.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Aina is a systems expert with over 15 years of experience advising federal and state governments on digital transition, institutional reforms and system design.
“Professor Aina is a distinguished academic and systems expert with extensive experience in national examination systems, digital infrastructure, and public-sector institutional reform,” the statement read.
Academic Background and Experience
Akahi News learnt that Aina holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, an MSc in Internet Computing and Network Security, and a PhD in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University, UK. He also completed the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School.
The Presidency said he has worked as a consultant to examination bodies including NECO and NABTEB on ICT systems and examination integrity. He is a registered member of COREN, the Nigerian Society of Engineers, IEEE and the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
His appointment signals a push to deepen digital reforms in Nigeria’s tertiary admissions process.
What Tinubu Expects from the New Registrar
President Tinubu expressed confidence that Aina would build on the reforms introduced under Oloyede’s administration. The statement noted that the president expects him to take JAMB beyond its current achievements using practical insight and technical expertise.
“President Tinubu expects Professor Aina to bring to bear his vast experience, knowledge and practical insight into the operations of the Board, to take the critical educational organisation beyond the laudable heights achieved by his predecessor,” Onanuga said.
For millions of UTME candidates, the appointment raises expectations around faster results processing, stronger exam security, and improved digital services.
Implications for Nigeria’s Examination System
JAMB has undergone major digital transformation in the last decade, including CBT adoption and biometric verification. Aina’s background in computer engineering and digital infrastructure positions him to advance these reforms.
The question for stakeholders is whether his youth and technical background will translate into smoother examinations and reduced malpractice. His time at OAU and as a consultant to other exam bodies suggests familiarity with the system.
