President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended Ondo State for what he described as remarkable and consistent development over the past five decades, praising the state as a shining example of steady growth, democratic maturity, and purposeful leadership in Nigeria.
The President made the remarks on Tuesday during a colourful ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the creation of Ondo State, held in Akure, the state capital. He was represented at the event by the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

According to Akahi News, President Tinubu noted that Ondo State has demonstrated strong dedication to democratic values and national progress, particularly in the areas of education, infrastructure, and human capital development. “As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ondo State, I hold the people of Ondo State with very high regards,” the President said. “I recognise the resilience, industry, and civic responsibility of Ondo people.”
He further recalled the conduct of the people of Ondo State during the last general elections, commending their discipline and commitment to democratic ideals.
“During the last national election, the people of Ondo State demonstrated remarkable participation, discipline, and commitment to democratic ideals. Your engagements strengthen the nation’s democracy and reinforce our belief in purposeful leadership,” Tinubu stated, assuring residents that his administration remains committed to serving all Nigerians equitably.

Leaders Reflect on 50 Years of Progress
The golden jubilee celebration also featured goodwill messages from prominent leaders across the region. Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, and former Ondo State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, both praised the resilience, unity, and determination of the people of the Sunshine State.
Akahi News gathered that Governor Oyebanji congratulated Ondo State for sustaining the vision of its founding fathers, describing the state as consistent in delivering meaningful development across various sectors.
He stressed that Ondo State has continued to play a vital role in the socio-economic advancement of the South-West region and Nigeria as a whole, noting that its progress should inspire other states to remain committed to people-oriented governance.

“I bring greetings from your brothers and sisters in Ekiti State,” Oyebanji said. “We started this journey together 50 years ago, and though we parted ways 29 years ago, we are grateful that Ondo State is going up and up. We are proud of the development strides that Ondo State has achieved.”
Aiyedatiwa Calls for Unity, Sustained Development
In his response, Ondo State Governor, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, expressed deep appreciation to President Tinubu and other dignitaries for honouring the state’s invitation to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
Governor Aiyedatiwa described the golden jubilee as a significant milestone that reflects the sacrifices, vision, and collective efforts of the founding fathers, as well as successive administrations that have contributed to the growth and transformation of the state.
He commended the people of Ondo State for their enduring unity, resilience, and consistent support for government initiatives over the years, urging them to continue to work together in peace and harmony.
According to Akahi News, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a more prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable Ondo State, while sustaining policies that will improve living standards, attract investments, and create economic opportunities.
Ondo’s Journey Since 1976
While reflecting on the state’s journey, Governor Aiyedatiwa noted that Ondo State has made remarkable progress in key sectors such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, and industrial development.
It would be recalled that Ondo State, alongside Ogun and Oyo States, was created from the old Western Region in 1976 when Nigeria adopted the 19-state structure. Ekiti State was later carved out of the old Ondo State on October 1, 1996.
As Ondo marks its first 50 years, observers believe the celebration offers both a moment of reflection and an opportunity to renew commitment to policies that will secure a stronger future for generations to come.
