Tinubu, Rwanda’s Kagame Hold Strategic Talks in Paris
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has held a private meeting with the President of the Republic of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, in Paris, France, as both leaders engaged in high-level discussions centred on global developments and strategies for advancing Africa’s collective interests.

Closed-Door Meeting Focused on Africa’s Future
Akahi News gathered that the meeting took place during a private lunch, where the two African leaders exchanged views on international affairs, continental cooperation, and Africa’s position in a rapidly evolving global order. Images released by the Presidency showed President Tinubu and President Kagame seated in a relaxed but focused atmosphere, suggesting a frank and strategic dialogue.
According to information available to Akahi News, the discussions reflected shared concerns about Africa’s development trajectory, economic self-reliance, and the need for stronger collaboration among African nations in global decision-making spaces.
Tinubu’s European Trip and Diplomatic Engagements
The Paris meeting comes shortly after President Tinubu departed Nigeria for Europe in late December as part of his end-of-year break, ahead of scheduled international engagements. Akahi News learnt that the President’s trip also aligns with preparations for his participation in major global forums focused on sustainability, economic diplomacy, and development cooperation.
Although details of his full European itinerary were not officially disclosed, observers noted that France has remained a frequent destination for President Tinubu during official and semi-official engagements abroad.
Growing Nigeria–Rwanda Relations
Sunday’s engagement further underscores the growing diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and Rwanda. Since President Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, both leaders have maintained consistent contact, reflecting mutual respect and shared policy interests.
President Kagame was among African leaders who attended Tinubu’s inauguration in Abuja, a gesture widely interpreted by analysts as a sign of Rwanda’s commitment to strengthening ties with Africa’s largest economy.
More recently, Akahi News gathered that both leaders met on the sidelines of an international summit in the Middle East earlier in the year, where they exchanged views on intra-African trade, regional stability, and the importance of Africans driving their own development agenda.
Calls for African Self-Reliance
In previous engagements, President Tinubu has consistently emphasised Africa’s capacity to chart its own development path, stressing the continent’s vast human and natural resources. Analysts believe that the Paris talks may further reinforce calls for deeper cooperation among African states, particularly in trade, security, and economic integration.
Nigeria and Rwanda have historically enjoyed cordial relations, cooperating within multilateral organisations such as the African Union and the United Nations. Bilateral initiatives, including air service agreements and technical cooperation programmes, have also strengthened ties between both countries.
Domestic Reactions and Ongoing Debate
Despite the diplomatic significance of the Paris meeting, President Tinubu’s continued foreign engagements have attracted criticism from opposition figures at home. Some political actors have argued that the President’s overseas trips come at a time when Nigeria is grappling with serious security and economic challenges.
However, supporters counter that the President’s travels are part of a broader strategy aimed at repositioning Nigeria through economic diplomacy, investment attraction, and stronger international partnerships.
As Akahi News continues to monitor developments, Sunday’s meeting in Paris adds another layer to President Tinubu’s active foreign policy approach, highlighting Nigeria’s ongoing engagement with key African leaders on the global stage.
