Trump Blasts Hochul’s Support for Mamdani

In a move that has sparked a major political storm, former President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to cut off federal funding to New York following Governor Kathy Hochul’s surprise endorsement of socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.

Trump, writing on his Truth Social account, called Hochul’s endorsement of Mamdani “shocking” and a “very bad one for New York City,” vowing that Washington would be “watching this situation very closely.”

“Governor Kathy Hochul of New York has Endorsed [sic] the ‘Liddle Communist,’ Zohran Mamdani, running for Mayor of New York,” Trump posted. “No reason to be sending good money after bad!”

Hochul Breaks Silence on Mayoral Race

Hochul’s support for Mamdani marks a dramatic turn in the heated New York City mayoral contest. For months, the governor had refused to take sides, maintaining a neutral stance amid growing pressure from both Democrats and progressives.

But in a guest essay published Sunday evening by The New York Times, Hochul revealed her decision, writing that she had held “frank conversations” with Mamdani and, despite some disagreements, believed he had “a bold vision” for the city’s future.

The endorsement has electrified Mamdani’s supporters while drawing fierce criticism from conservatives, who accuse Hochul of backing “radical policies” at the expense of New Yorkers.

Political Fallout and Legal Questions

Trump’s threat to withhold federal funds has raised questions about its legality, with constitutional experts noting that federal spending is largely controlled by Congress, not the president.

Courts have previously blocked similar attempts, including efforts by Trump’s administration to deny funding to so-called “sanctuary cities,” ruling that such actions exceeded executive authority.

While the former president’s comments have energized his political base, it remains unclear whether any practical steps will follow or if the threat is largely rhetorical ahead of the 2025 political season.

What Lies Ahead

With New York City’s mayoral election fast approaching, Hochul’s endorsement of Mamdani could reshape the race, drawing fresh attention to progressive candidates and intensifying the debate over the city’s direction.

As the situation unfolds, political analysts expect further clashes between Trump loyalists and Democratic leaders over federal funding, state autonomy, and the limits of executive power.
