Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the state’s power sector and advancing the long-anticipated Ibom Deep Seaport project following a recent visit to the United Kingdom.

The governor disclosed that he accompanied President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on a state visit, during which he engaged with potential investors, particularly those with interest in energy infrastructure—an area widely regarded as critical to Nigeria’s economic transformation.

Strategic Engagement for Long-Term Growth

According to Governor Eno, the visit provided an opportunity to position Akwa Ibom as an attractive destination for investment, especially in sectors capable of driving sustainable development.

Akahi News gathered that discussions centred largely on improving electricity supply and unlocking industrial potential through large-scale infrastructure projects.

Power remains a major constraint to economic productivity in Nigeria, and subnational governments have increasingly sought innovative partnerships to bridge the gap.

This raises a fundamental question: can state-level initiatives succeed where national efforts have struggled, or are they ultimately bound by the same systemic challenges?

Ibom Deep Seaport: Vision or Delayed Promise?

The Ibom Deep Seaport project, long considered a cornerstone of Akwa Ibom’s economic ambitions, once again took centre stage in the governor’s remarks. Designed to serve as a major maritime hub, the project is expected to boost trade, create jobs, and stimulate industrial growth.

Governor Eno acknowledged that such large-scale developments require time, careful planning, and sustained investment. He, however, expressed confidence that progress is being made, noting growing investor interest.

Akahi News learnt that the administration views the seaport not merely as infrastructure, but as a gateway to economic diversification.

Yet, one must ask: how many ambitious projects in Nigeria have remained visions due to delays, and what makes this one different?

Beyond the seaport, the governor emphasised the importance of improving electricity supply—a sector that directly impacts businesses, households, and overall economic stability.

Reliable power is often described as the backbone of industrialisation. Without it, even the most ambitious projects risk underperformance.

This leads to another reflection: can meaningful development occur without first resolving foundational issues like energy, or must both progress simultaneously?

Governor Eno’s remarks also carried a tone of optimism grounded in faith, as he expressed confidence that the state would achieve its goals “by the grace of God.”
