UNICAL Hosts Inaugural National Colloquium on Special Needs Education, Honoring Prof. Emeka Ozoji’s Legacy
The University of Calabar (UNICAL) held its first-ever National Colloquium on Special Needs Education on Thursday, October 17, 2024, in honor of Professor Emeka Desmond Ozoji, who recently retired after a distinguished career. The two-day conference, themed “Nigerian Special Needs Education in Search of an Identity,” aimed to address the challenges and opportunities in special needs education across the country.

The event brought together prominent educators, policymakers, and experts to discuss innovative approaches, inclusive education practices, and the need for policy reforms to better support children with special needs. Key objectives included tackling barriers in special education, exploring best practices, and fostering dialogue for creating a more inclusive learning environment in Nigeria.
The conference also served as a celebration of Prof. Ozoji’s lifelong commitment to special needs education. His dedication to the field has inspired generations of educators and researchers, including Dr. Musa Moses Egaga, Dr. Josephine Dasel Nanjwan, and Mr. Innocent Ushi Igba, all of whom have contributed significantly to research in special education at UNICAL’s Department of Special Education.
