Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has made a surprise public appearance at the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in London, quelling widespread rumours about his health and alleged incapacitation.

Two men engaged in conversation at an art gallery, surrounded by framed artworks. One man is wearing glasses and a patterned shirt, while the other is dressed in an overcoat with a colorful scarf.

Edun was spotted on Wednesday at the O’DA Art Gallery booth in Somerset House, United Kingdom, where he was seen interacting with artists, curators, and exhibitors. The appearance — captured in videos shared by the official Instagram handle of O’DA Art Gallery — showed the Minister in good spirits, calmly touring the exhibition.

His presence comes amid intense speculation earlier in the week suggesting he had suffered a stroke and was flown abroad for treatment — reports that the Presidency dismissed as “false, sensational, and irresponsible.”

According to the Presidential clarification, Edun had only taken a short rest in Abuja following an illness but had since fully recovered.

🎨 Celebrating African Art and Creative Expression

In a post accompanying the viral video, O’DA Art Gallery expressed delight at hosting the Minister:

“It was an honour to welcome the Honourable Minister of Finance, Wale Edun – @finminnigeria, to the O’DA Art Gallery booth at 1-54 London today, 15 October, 2025.”

The gallery showcased a presentation titled “Lines of Spirit,” featuring works by Simon Ojeaga, Paul Majek, and Afeez Onakoya, celebrating contemporary African abstraction and the enduring power of line, form, and spirit.

Edun’s attendance, observers note, reflects his continued commitment to cultural diplomacy and Nigeria’s growing engagement with creative industries as part of its economic diversification drive.

🌍 A Powerful Statement on Global Stage

His calm, confident appearance has gone viral across Nigerian social media, with many citizens and art enthusiasts expressing relief and admiration. Some praised his presence at an event that amplifies African creativity and innovation, while others described it as a symbolic moment of reassurance amid rumours of instability within the economic team.

The 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, held annually at Somerset House, remains one of the world’s most prestigious platforms dedicated to African and diaspora art, drawing galleries, collectors, and artists from around the globe.

Edun’s participation not only underscores Nigeria’s cultural influence abroad but also sends a clear message — the Minister is healthy, active, and firmly focused on his duties.
