The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has issued a firm three-day deadline to contractors responsible for waste management in Abuja’s satellite towns, ordering the immediate evacuation of refuse or face termination of their contracts.
Akahi News gathered that the directive followed the minister’s inspection of ongoing road projects across Karu, Bwari, Kubwa, and the Apo–Karshi road corridor, where he reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the level of sanitation observed in several communities.

Minister Expresses Concern Over Environmental Conditions
During the inspection, Wike reportedly condemned the growing heaps of refuse along major routes, particularly within the Orozo–Apo–Karshi axis, describing the situation as unacceptable for areas experiencing rapid urban development.
According to Akahi News, the minister stressed that poor sanitation undermines government investments in infrastructure and poses significant public health risks to residents. He directed officials of the FCT Satellite Towns Development Department to ensure strict enforcement of the directive within the specified timeframe.
Observers noted that the minister’s comments reflected increasing concern within the FCT Administration over the environmental impact of unmanaged waste, especially as satellite towns continue to expand in population and economic activity.
Warning Against Poor Performance and Non-Compliance
Wike reportedly warned that contractors who fail to meet expectations would have their appointments terminated, insisting that performance must remain the basis for engagement rather than political considerations.
Akahi News learnt that the minister reiterated the administration’s position that waste management remains one of the major challenges confronting Abuja, particularly in fast-growing suburban areas where infrastructure development has outpaced environmental management systems.
The minister emphasised that contractors are expected to demonstrate both technical capacity and commitment, stressing that payment for services must be tied to visible results on the ground.
Sanitation and Urban Development Challenges in Satellite Towns
Satellite towns around Abuja have witnessed rapid expansion in recent years, driven by population growth and increasing housing development. Analysts believe this growth has placed significant pressure on waste management systems, resulting in recurring sanitation concerns.
Urban development experts say effective waste evacuation is essential not only for environmental cleanliness but also for public health, traffic safety, and overall urban planning. Accumulated refuse along major roads and residential areas, they argue, can discourage investment and reduce the quality of life for residents.
Akahi News gathered that the latest directive forms part of broader efforts by the FCT Administration to improve environmental standards and align sanitation with ongoing infrastructure projects across the capital territory.
Government’s Renewed Push for Accountability
The minister’s latest warning is seen by observers as a continuation of earlier assurances that incompetence and inefficiency would not be tolerated in the management of public services. Officials have repeatedly maintained that contractors must deliver measurable outcomes or risk losing their contracts.
Residents in affected areas have expressed hope that the ultimatum will lead to sustained improvements, noting that waste disposal challenges have remained a persistent concern despite previous interventions.
The three-day deadline underscores growing pressure on service providers to meet sanitation expectations as Abuja continues to expand beyond its central districts. Whether the ultimatum results in lasting change will depend largely on enforcement and sustained monitoring in the coming weeks. For many residents, however, the directive signals a renewed push towards accountability and environmental responsibility within the nation’s capital.
