2027 Showdown: Wike–Makinde Rift Threatens PDP Ahead of Ibadan Convention
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is once again grappling with internal turmoil as tensions between Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, deepen ahead of the party’s national convention scheduled for November in Ibadan.

The 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the PDP, held in Abuja last month, had resolved to move the elective national convention from Kano to Ibadan, Makinde’s political base, with the presidential ticket for the 2027 general election zoned to the South. While the decision was projected as a move to strengthen party unity, it has instead widened fault lines within the opposition party.
Wike’s Opposition and Threats of Legal Action
Wike, who has remained a dominant figure in PDP politics despite serving in President Bola Tinubu’s administration, has rejected the Ibadan convention outright. He argued that internal disputes within the South-South and South-East leadership of the party must be resolved before any convention can be considered legitimate.
The former Rivers State governor also claimed he had not received proper notice of the NEC meeting that ratified Ibadan as venue, insisting that due process was not followed. In a television interview, he warned that any attempt to proceed without resolving outstanding issues could lead to legal challenges and further destabilise the party.
PDP Leadership Pushes Back
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, swiftly dismissed Wike’s claims, stressing that all constitutional requirements were met. According to him, notices were duly issued, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was formally notified, and both NEC and other party organs had endorsed the Ibadan convention.
In addition, Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor described Wike’s threats as “unnecessary distractions,” citing Supreme Court precedents that bar the judiciary from interfering in internal party matters. He urged members to rally behind the leadership to ensure a credible and peaceful convention.
Makinde’s Position Strengthened
For Makinde, the decision to host the convention in Ibadan represents a major political boost. Analysts believe the move places him at the centre of PDP’s restructuring process while signalling his growing influence within the party. The zoning of the 2027 presidential ticket to the South further fuels speculation that the Oyo State governor could play a decisive role in determining the party’s standard-bearer.
Observers, however, caution that the open feud with Wike, once his close ally in the G-5 governors’ bloc, could weaken PDP’s ability to present a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
A Party at the Crossroads
The looming Ibadan convention, billed for November 15–16, is shaping up as a test of PDP’s ability to manage internal dissent and reposition itself ahead of the 2027 elections. While the leadership insists that the process will go ahead as planned, the sharp division between two of its most influential figures underscores the fragility of opposition unity in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Whether the PDP emerges stronger or more fractured after Ibadan will likely determine its chances of mounting a credible challenge in 2027.
