Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has once again reaffirmed his commitment to dignified leadership, stating clearly that he would not engage in political mudslinging or reduce governance to a contest of insults. The governor made this known while addressing party supporters and journalists in Ibadan, amid growing political tension in the state and at the national level.
Commitment to Civil Politics
Governor Makinde, who has often projected himself as a leader of integrity and balance, emphasised that his focus remained on delivering good governance rather than trading words with political opponents.
“I am not ready to go into the gutters with anyone. My duty is to lead Oyo people responsibly and provide development that will speak for itself,” he stated firmly.
The governor insisted that politics should not be reduced to personal attacks or unnecessary drama, urging political actors to prioritise the welfare of the people over selfish ambitions.
Rising Political Tension in Oyo
The governor’s declaration comes at a time when the political climate in Oyo State has become charged, with rival factions engaging in heated verbal exchanges ahead of the 2027 general elections. Party loyalists and opposition figures have frequently clashed over policy directions, accusations of betrayal, and questions of loyalty to national leaders.
Makinde’s refusal to be drawn into the fray is seen by analysts as a deliberate strategy to maintain stability in the state and safeguard his administration’s reputation as one of progress and reform.
Focus on Development, Not Distraction
Highlighting his administration’s achievements, the governor pointed to ongoing projects in infrastructure, education, health, and security as evidence of his commitment to the people. According to him, the residents of Oyo State deserve tangible results, not spectacles of political mudslinging.
Political observers note that this approach could strengthen his standing as a leader who prioritises issues over insults, setting him apart from rivals who rely heavily on aggressive rhetoric.
Public Reactions
Reactions to the governor’s statement have been divided. Supporters applauded his resolve, saying his maturity represents the type of leadership needed in Nigeria’s turbulent political landscape.
Critics, however, argued that politics in Nigeria has always been combative, warning that his reluctance to “fight dirty” might be interpreted by opponents as a weakness.
Looking Ahead
With general elections drawing nearer, all eyes will remain on Makinde to see whether he can sustain this calm, issue-driven approach amidst increasing pressure from both internal and external political rivals. His insistence on rising above the fray could set a new tone for political engagement in Oyo State and beyond.
Governor Makinde’s words, “I’m not ready to go into the gutters with anyone,” may have sounded like a simple declaration. But in the context of Nigeria’s political climate, it is a bold message of restraint, one that challenges the prevailing culture of hostility and reaffirms his focus on governance over gossip.
