Abia Government to Revitalise Four Moribund Companies in Aba

The Abia State Government has announced plans to revitalise four moribund companies in Aba, including the Aba Textile Mills, International Equitable Industries, Afro Beverages, and Star Paper Mills, as part of efforts to create jobs and generate revenue for residents.
Information Commissioner Okey Kanu disclosed this at the Government House in Umuahia during a briefing on Monday, following the outcome of the state Executive Council meeting. He noted that the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) had approved Abia’s plan to take over Star Paper Mills, with the recovery and revitalisation of the company to be followed by its sale to private sector investors. The state intends to retain enough shares to ensure that Abia residents are not shortchanged by new management.
Mr Kanu highlighted that the government’s revitalisation programme is aimed at job creation and boosting state revenue, while also restoring confidence in local industries.
In health sector updates, Kanu noted that the Abia Health Insurance Scheme had exceeded its target for 2025, registering 103,076 enrollees, signalling residents’ confidence in the scheme. Plans to register residents in the informal sector will be announced later. Additionally, two new departments—the Abia Drug and Medical Commodities Management Agency and the Department of Nutrition within the Ministry of Health—have been established to enhance public healthcare.
Under Project Ekwueme, 121 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) have been completed, with 17 now fully functional, 33 in the process of being equipped, and another 50 scheduled for operation during the programme’s third phase in October. The state currently has approximately 948 PHCs, with rehabilitation being conducted in phases.
In environmental initiatives, the Ministry of Environment began house-to-house sanitary inspections in all 17 LGAs on August 1 to encourage proper hygiene practices, warning that defaulters would face prosecution under state environmental laws.
Furthermore, the Abia Health, Safety, and Environment Policy was approved by the Executive Council to safeguard the well-being of the state’s civil servants, with Governor Alex Otti endorsing the implementation of the policy.
