Benue Hosts Over 500,000 IDPs Amid Rising Security Challenges; EU and IOM Pledge $1.1 Million Support

Benue State is currently grappling with a major humanitarian crisis, driven by ongoing herder-farmer conflicts and armed banditry, which have severely disrupted the agrarian livelihoods central to the state’s economy. Presently, 500,182 internally displaced persons (IDPs) are living in 26 camps and camp-like settings, managed by the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in collaboration with IOM Nigeria.
On Monday, senior officials from Denmark and the EU, including Ambassador and Senior Programme Manager Hilda Ayejimiwo and Senior Security Adviser Yakubu Mohammed, joined the Deputy Director General of IOM, Ms. Ugochi Daniels, alongside the EU delegation, to visit IDP camps in the state. The visit was conducted in partnership with Governor Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia.
The EU and its member states announced a new contribution of $1.1 million through IOM to support humanitarian efforts in Benue. The funds aim to restore dignity and hope to children, women, and men affected by the escalating security challenges.
Denmark expressed pride in supporting IOM’s work, highlighting the close cooperation with the state government and the tangible difference being made for thousands of displaced persons across Nigeria.
The visit underscored the urgent need for sustained humanitarian intervention, as Benue continues to bear the brunt of insecurity, displacement, and disrupted livelihoods.
