Police Trace Criminals to Akwa Ibom Hideout
According to a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen C. Chinaka, the suspects were traced to Ikot Ukpon Village, Obot Akara LGA in Akwa Ibom State following credible intelligence.
During the raid on 21 August at about 8:30 p.m., operatives recovered two AK-47 rifles, 57 live rounds of ammunition, one locally made pistol, six magazines, and a bag containing items suspected to be charms and spiritual materials.
Gun Battle as Suspects Attempt Escape
Akahi News gathered that while exiting the camp, the operatives were ambushed by other members of the gang, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire. The six arrested suspects, who sustained gunshot wounds while attempting to flee, later died on their way to the hospital. Two police officers also sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
DSP Chinaka added that several other gang members managed to escape with bullet injuries, while security forces continue combing the area in search of the fleeing criminals.
CP Reassures Citizens of Safety
The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Danladi Isa, reaffirmed the Command’s determination to flush out criminals from the state.
“There will be no hiding place for criminals in Abia. Every unrepentant criminal will face the full wrath of the law,” he stated, while also confirming collaboration with the Akwa Ibom State Police Command to track down fleeing suspects.
The CP further urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report individuals with gunshot wounds or suspicious behaviour to the nearest police station.
Community Urged to Support Security Agencies
The development comes amid renewed calls for stronger community–police collaboration to dismantle kidnapping networks across the South-East and South-South regions. Authorities maintain that joint vigilance remains key to curbing the rising menace.
