Second Pipeline Spill in Three Months Raises Environmental Concerns
A fresh crude oil spill has been reported in Ikata community, Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State, sparking renewed concerns over the safety of oil operations in the Niger Delta. The incident, which occurred on Friday, 22 August 2025, affected the 14-inch Okordia–Rumuekpe pipeline operated by Renaissance Africa Energy Ltd.

According to the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria), the spill is suspected to have been caused by sabotage, although the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) is yet to confirm the exact cause.
Pattern of Recurring Spills
Akahi News gathered that this marks the second spill recorded on the same pipeline within three months, with a previous incident reported on 5 May 2025. In addition, less than three weeks ago, an oil spill was documented in Kpean community, Khana Local Government Area, which NOSDRA attributed to equipment failure.
The recurrence of spills has heightened fears of long-term damage to fragile ecosystems in Rivers State, where communities rely heavily on farmlands and water bodies for survival.
Advocacy Group Calls for Urgent Action
YEAC-Nigeria’s Executive Director, Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, has called on NOSDRA to carry out a joint investigation visit (JIV) to establish the cause of the latest spill and enforce accountability under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021.
“Swift intervention is needed to protect the flora and fauna in Ikata and prevent further devastation of the environment,” Dr. Fyneface stressed.
Operator’s Expected Response
While Renaissance Africa Energy Ltd has not yet issued a detailed statement on this latest incident, the company’s past responses suggest it may isolate the affected segment of the pipeline, suspend production, and collaborate with regulators on investigations to mitigate environmental damage.
Environmental advocates, however, insist that beyond temporary measures, there must be stronger regulatory enforcement to ensure oil companies prevent recurring spills and adequately compensate impacted communities.
