Adeyanju Blasts IGP Egbetokun Over Alleged Unfair Police Promotions

By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News

Prominent human rights activist and lawyer, Barrister Deji Adeyanju, has launched a scathing criticism of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, accusing him of promoting unqualified officers while sidelining hardworking and diligent personnel in the Nigerian Police Force.

Adeyanju, known for his outspoken stance on governance and human rights issues, took to his official Facebook page to express his displeasure, describing the IGP as “the most useless and incompetent IGP in the history of the Nigerian Police Force.”

In his post, the activist lawyer alleged that the current promotion exercise within the force has been marred by favouritism and a lack of meritocracy. According to him, deserving officers who have demonstrated commitment and integrity in service are being overlooked in favour of those with connections or political backing.

“All hail Egbetokun, the most useless and incompetent IGP in the history of the Nigerian Police Force,” Adeyanju wrote, adding that such actions demoralise dedicated officers and erode public trust in law enforcement.

The remarks have since sparked heated reactions online, with some social media users supporting Adeyanju’s position, while others defended the police leadership, arguing that the promotion process may involve factors unknown to the public.

As of press time, the Nigerian Police Force had yet to respond to Adeyanju’s allegations. However, concerns over fairness and transparency in police promotions have long been a recurring issue, with calls for a more merit-based system gaining traction among security analysts and civil society groups.

Observers note that public confidence in law enforcement depends heavily on the perception that officers are rewarded based on performance rather than personal connections — a standard many believe Nigeria must strive to meet if it hopes to strengthen its policing system.
