Akwa Ibom Governor Eno Defends Political Aides’ Salaries, Promotes PA for Community Service

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has publicly criticised some of his political aides for underestimating their own salaries, insisting that even the lowest-paid appointments in his administration are financially well-compensated.

Governor Eno made the remarks during a Town Square Meeting with residents of the Ikono and Ini Federal Constituency at Ibiaku Ntok Okpo, where he also elevated his Personal Assistant on Protocol, Blessed Essien, to the position of Special Assistant (SA), Public Works, recognising his contribution to community development.

“As I arrived here, they gave me one brochure by a PA who, out of the token he gets, has gone to his community to do a borehole and has replicated it around the village,” Eno said. He added that some political appointees still falsely claim the governor has not contributed to community development, saying: “Some say ordinary PA, but a PA to the governor of a state cannot be ordinary.”

He stressed, “Hear me well, no PA earns less than a million naira. And when they want to talk, they will say it is a stipend. You call one million naira stipend. It is not a stipend to me. It is serious money.”

Governor Eno also revealed plans to make the salaries of all political appointees public, instructing the Secretary of the Government to compile a comprehensive list according to local government areas for newspaper publication.

In urging residents to hold officials accountable, he said: “Call your PAs, call your SAs, SSAs, call your Commissioner, ask them, what have you done?”

The governor concluded the event by formally promoting Blessed Essien, acknowledging his impactful gesture of donating a water borehole to his community, stating: “Today you are being promoted from PA to SA (to the Governor) on Public Works.”
