Anambra Assembly Suspends Ayamelum Lawmaker for Three Months

The Anambra State House of Assembly has suspended Bernard Udemezue, the member representing Ayamelum Constituency, for a period of three months over a social media post deemed “damaging content.”
Udemezue, elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had alleged on his social media platforms that his constituency was being marginalised in the allocation of constituency allowances, sparking a swift reaction from the House.
Following the post, the Assembly acted promptly. The House first resolved to summon Udemezue during plenary last Tuesday after a matter of urgent public importance was raised by Tony Muobike, member representing Aguata 2 Constituency, and seconded by the Chief Whip, Jude Ngobili, representing Ihiala 1 Constituency.
Presiding over the plenary, Speaker Somtochukwu Udeze referred the matter to the House Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics, and Privileges, which submitted its report this week. Acting on the committee’s recommendations, the House plenary passed the resolution to suspend Udemezue for three months during today’s sitting.
The suspension underscores the Assembly’s stance on social media conduct by its members and signals strict enforcement of ethical standards within the legislative chamber.
