Senators’ Productivity Index: Ekiti Tops, Sokoto and FCT Trail Behind

The latest Senators’ Productivity Index (June 2023 – June 2024) has revealed surprising disparities in legislative output across Nigeria, with tiny Ekiti State outperforming political heavyweights like Kano and Lagos, while the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Sokoto State rank at the bottom.
According to the index, Ekiti leads the nation with a staggering 292 points, a reflection of its senators’ active participation in legislative duties, sponsorship of bills, and contribution to plenary debates. This remarkable performance has prompted analysts to ask why a relatively small state surpasses the likes of Kano and Lagos, which traditionally wield considerable political influence.
Following Ekiti are Benue (181), Kano (125), and Borno (114), showcasing that high population or political prominence does not automatically translate into legislative productivity. Meanwhile, Sokoto and the FCT lag far behind, scoring 15 and 11 points respectively, raising questions about engagement and effectiveness in areas considered historically significant in Nigerian politics.
Other notable positions include Lagos (58), Rivers (36), Oyo (27), and Kaduna (24), indicating a wide disparity in senatorial output across states. Experts argue that factors such as senators’ commitment, constituency engagement, and legislative priorities largely determine these rankings, rather than the size or influence of a state.
Akahi News gathered that Ekiti’s success is partly attributed to proactive bills sponsorship, consistent plenary attendance, and effective constituency representation. In contrast, the FCT’s low score reflects limited legislative activity, despite its status as Nigeria’s political heartbeat. Sokoto’s slide, analysts note, could stem from internal political dynamics and a focus on local rather than national legislative engagement.
The index provides a crucial benchmark for citizens, media, and policymakers to assess and demand accountability from their elected representatives, ensuring that legislative duties are performed effectively and transparently.
