APC Accuses Governor Adeleke of Abdicating Duty, Demands Clarification on Foreign Trip.

Osogbo, Osun State — 7 August 2025 | Akahi News
Tensions have intensified in Osun State’s political landscape as the All Progressives Congress (APC) has launched a scathing criticism against the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)-led administration, accusing Governor Ademola Adeleke of “abandoning his constitutional responsibilities” following his prolonged absence from the country.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Osun State chapter of the APC alleged that the governor has been out of the country for over two weeks, without notifying the public or formally transferring authority to his deputy, Mr. Kola Adewusi, as constitutionally required. The party described the situation as “irresponsible and alarming,” calling it a dangerous precedent that undermines governance and accountability.
“Governor Adeleke has absconded from duty without transparency or respect for democratic protocols. The state cannot be left adrift under such vague and unofficial arrangements,” the statement read.
The APC further criticised the silence of the Osun State Government regarding the governor’s whereabouts, describing it as “a deliberate act to keep citizens in the dark.” The party claimed that while Adeleke was seen attending social events abroad—including the high-profile wedding of his nephew, music icon Davido in Miami, USA—issues of governance at home were being sidelined.
No Formal Handover, No Official Communication
What seems to have stirred deeper concern is the absence of any formal notice from the governor’s office or Osun State House of Assembly detailing the duration and purpose of Adeleke’s trip, or an executive handover to his deputy. Legal experts and political observers have weighed in, arguing that a sitting governor’s extended absence without official communication or delegation of authority raises constitutional red flags.
Dr. Tolu Ajiboye, a constitutional lawyer based in Osogbo, noted,
“The Constitution does not allow a vacuum in the executive arm. If the governor travels for such a period, he is duty-bound to transmit power to his deputy to act in his stead. Failure to do so may amount to dereliction of duty.”
Government Responds: “No Cause for Alarm”
In a muted but defensive response, one of Governor Adeleke’s media aides dismissed the APC’s statement as politically motivated. According to him, the governor is “well and in touch with the machinery of government,” adding that no sector of governance has suffered due to his temporary absence.
“Governor Adeleke travelled on a private engagement and has remained accessible to key members of his administration. The deputy governor is not idle either. The APC should focus on constructive engagement instead of stirring up manufactured panic,” the aide said.
However, critics argue that informal explanations through aides do little to satisfy public expectation for transparency from the highest office in the state.
Public Reactions: Discontent and Demand for Clarity
Across Osun State, public opinion remains divided. While loyalists of the PDP dismiss the accusations as overblown, many residents have expressed unease over the lack of official updates from the governor’s office.
Civil society groups, including the Osun Transparency Collective (OTC), have issued a joint statement demanding a full disclosure of the governor’s travel details and a formal clarification of the current governance structure during his absence.
“Silence is not an option in a democracy. Osun people deserve to know who is running their government day to day,” the OTC said.
With the opposition pressing hard and the state government remaining tight-lipped, Governor Adeleke’s unexplained absence has opened a new chapter in Osun’s political narrative—one that may test the boundaries between governance and personal liberty, loyalty and legality.
