The Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Digital Force, Ikeagwuonwu Klinsmann, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to grant a state pardon to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
In a statement issued from Stockholm, Sweden, on Tuesday, Klinsmann described such a move as an extraordinary gesture of national reconciliation and renewed hope for unity, aligning with President Tinubu’s vision of inclusive governance.
According to Akahi News, the APC chieftain praised the President as “a leader with a heart of gold,” noting that his administration has consistently demonstrated compassion and political maturity in addressing Nigeria’s complex social and ethnic divisions.
“At a time when Nigeria is navigating sensitive political and ethnic fault lines, the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu would represent a bold step toward healing the scars of division and restoring confidence among the people of the South-East,” Klinsmann said.
Kanu’s Detention and Tinubu’s Leadership Approach
Kanu has been in detention since his re-arrest in 2021 after fleeing Nigeria in the wake of criminal charges related to his secessionist campaign. His continued detention, despite various court rulings questioning its legality, has been a major source of agitation and unrest in the South-East region.
Klinsmann urged the President to exercise his constitutional powers under Section 175 of the 1999 Constitution, which authorises him to grant pardons or reprieves in deserving cases.

According to Akahi News, Klinsmann also referenced his previous appeal to the President following the death of Pope Francis, describing it as a divine window for reconciliation and a chance to honour the late Pope’s message of mercy and forgiveness.
He maintained that granting Kanu a state pardon would resonate with the Renewed Hope Agenda — a platform built on restoring peace, promoting equity, and fostering unity across all geopolitical zones.
