The All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared firm confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will secure a second term in the 2027 general elections, irrespective of who emerges as the next INEC chairman.

Speaking in an interview with The Sun, APC’s National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, dismissed insinuations that the ruling party is lobbying to influence the appointment of the incoming electoral umpire as the tenure of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the current INEC chairman, nears its end this year.

“How can you be asking a player to recommend a referee? We are players and do not care about which referee is brought to officiate the match,” Basiru said, stressing that the party’s victory is not tied to who heads INEC.

Party’s Confidence in Tinubu’s Re-election

The APC chieftain further asserted that the ruling party is concentrating on mobilising and sensitising its members nationwide to ensure victory for President Tinubu.
“In fact, by the time we mobilise, even if the new chairman of INEC is the father of the presidential candidate of another party, Asiwaju will still win the election,” he added.

Reactions Across Political Space

The bold statement has stirred mixed reactions across political and social media circles, with critics questioning the APC’s confidence amid Nigeria’s economic and political tensions. Opposition voices argue that such remarks reflect overconfidence, while APC loyalists insist it demonstrates the ruling party’s grassroots strength.

With the countdown to 2027 underway, the debate over electoral integrity and party dominance is set to intensify in Nigeria’s political landscape.
