APC Rejects Moves to Impeach Rivers Governor Fubara, Warns Against Political Destabilisation
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has firmly rejected the move by the State House of Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, describing the action as politically motivated and capable of destabilising governance in the state.
Akahi News gathered that the Rivers State House of Assembly on Thursday initiated steps toward impeachment, citing alleged misconduct against the governor. The development has sparked renewed political tension in the oil-rich state, barely months after internal realignments reshaped the political landscape.

APC Faults Impeachment Process
Reacting to the development, the Rivers State chapter of the APC distanced itself from the impeachment move, insisting that it does not represent the position of the party. In a statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Darlington Nwauju, the APC said it “solemnly rejects” any attempt to remove the governor and his deputy through impeachment.
According to the statement, it would be “totally untenable” for the party to remain silent while what it described as unresolved political disputes are allowed to spill over and undermine governance.
Akahi News learnt that the party views the impeachment process as a continuation of earlier political conflicts, warning that such actions could plunge the state into avoidable instability.
‘Rivers APC Government Must Not Be Destabilised’
Nwauju further stressed that Rivers State is currently governed under the APC platform and that the party would resist any move capable of weakening its hold on the state.
He said the party would “do everything possible” to ensure that the APC-led government in Rivers State is not destabilised by internal or external political manoeuvres.
Political observers note that the stance taken by the APC may further complicate relations between the executive and the legislature, especially as the Assembly is expected to issue a formal impeachment notice to the governor and his deputy within seven days.
Political Tension Deepens
The unfolding situation has continued to generate reactions across party lines, with analysts warning that impeachment proceedings, if pursued, could deepen political divisions and distract from governance.
Akahi News gathered that stakeholders are calling for dialogue and restraint, urging political actors to prioritise stability and the interests of Rivers State residents over partisan battles.
As events continue to unfold, attention remains fixed on the State House of Assembly and the next steps it will take amid growing political resistance.
