Benue Assembly Elects Alfred Berger as New Speaker After Dajoh’s Resignation
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
The Benue State House of Assembly has elected Hon. Alfred Berger, member representing Makurdi North Constituency, as its new Speaker following the resignation of Hon. Aondona Dajoh.

Berger was sworn in during an emergency plenary session on Sunday presided over by Deputy Speaker, Hon. Lami Ogenyi. In his acceptance remarks, the new Speaker pledged to foster unity, reconciliation, and transparent leadership.
“I consider this a call to service and a renewed responsibility to lead with fairness, inclusivity, and transparency,” Berger declared. “My focus will be on stabilising the House, healing past divisions, and working hand in hand with Governor Hyacinth Alia, my colleagues, and the people of Benue to deliver on our legislative mandate.”
Suspension Lifted Before Election
Akahi News learnt that Berger’s emergence followed the House’s unanimous decision to lift the suspension earlier placed on him and three other members last Friday over their alleged attempt to unseat Dajoh. The chamber also resolved to set aside its rules to pave the way for the new leadership.
Hon. Dajoh, in his resignation letter dated 24 August 2025, said he was stepping down “in good faith and in the best interest of the state.” He assured that he would continue to serve as the representative of Gboko West Constituency.
Reconciliation and Stability
Berger, who previously served as the House spokesperson before his suspension, emphasised that his leadership would focus on reconciliation and inclusiveness. “I hold no grudges. The task before us now is to unite, legislate effectively, and support the executive in driving policies that benefit our people,” he said.
Governor Alia Distances Self
Meanwhile, Governor Hyacinth Alia, through his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, distanced himself from speculations linking him to the leadership change. He clarified that the transition was purely an internal affair of the Assembly.
With Berger at the helm, lawmakers and political observers will be watching closely to see how the new leadership reshapes the Assembly’s agenda and relationship with the executive arm of government.
