Beware These Toxic “Geh Geh” Teachings That Can Destroy Your Relationship
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
Relationship experts are cautioning individuals against adopting harmful “Geh Geh” teachings, which they warn can irreparably damage marriages and partnerships. These teachings, often circulated online, promote mistrust, insecurity, and selfishness in relationships.

Some of the most damaging notions include:
- “Your wife is only interested in your success. Don’t tell her your financial struggles else she will leave you for another man.”
Reality: This mindset is deeply flawed. Many women support their partners through difficult times when there is honesty and open communication. Silence and suspicion erode trust. - “If you open a business for your wife, make sure it’s in your name and under your control. Once she becomes financially independent, she will leave you.”
Reality: A wife with her own income strengthens the family, especially during unexpected challenges. Controlling her finances fosters insecurity, not loyalty. - “Women should be the ones paying dowry for men, because they need more men.”
Reality: This is culturally inaccurate and impractical. In most Nigerian traditions, men pay dowry as a symbol of responsibility and honour. Reversing this disregards longstanding cultural norms. - “Have many girlfriends and make relationships purely transactional.”
Reality: Promiscuity and transactional relationships destroy trust. True love thrives on loyalty and mutual respect, not multiple affairs.
Experts stress that every relationship is unique and must be nurtured with honesty, respect, and open communication. Applying these toxic generalisations to a healthy marriage risks undermining trust and intimacy, potentially leading to its collapse.
