Carnival Calabar Introduces Online Voting to Boost Tourism Revenue and Global Participation

Carnival Calabar is embracing digital innovation as the Cross River State Government intensifies efforts to expand tourism, attract more visitors and increase the festival’s economic contribution. The introduction of online registration and voting is expected to give carnival enthusiasts greater opportunities to participate, including those living outside Nigeria.

The Chairman of the Cross River State Carnival Commission, Gabe Onah, disclosed the initiative during the flag-off of the carnival’s first dry run in Calabar, where he highlighted the festival’s growing importance as a platform for cultural expression, youth development, national unity and economic growth.

According to a report published by The Sun on Monday, 19 October 2026, the commission is seeking to build on the estimated ₦19 billion socio-economic impact attributed to the preceding edition by broadening public participation and strengthening the carnival’s commercial appeal.

Online Voting to Give Spectators a Greater Role

Under the new arrangement, spectators will be able to register online and vote for their preferred carnival band in the competition for Band of the Year.

The initiative represents a shift towards a more participatory festival experience, allowing audiences to contribute to the competition rather than merely watch performances along the carnival route.

Onah explained that the commission wanted members of the public to become active participants in the festival. Digital registration and voting could also help participating bands build stronger relationships with supporters across Nigeria and beyond.

The approach offers opportunities to extend Carnival Calabar’s reach beyond the physical streets of the state capital. People who cannot travel to Calabar may still be able to engage with the festival through its digital platforms.

For the organisers, the broader objective is to combine the carnival’s established cultural attractions with technology that can improve accessibility, audience engagement and revenue generation.

Cross River Targets Higher Economic Returns

The carnival has become an important component of Cross River State’s tourism strategy, attracting visitors, performers and cultural enthusiasts while creating commercial opportunities for businesses.

Onah said the preceding edition generated approximately ₦19 billion in socio-economic impact. The commission is now seeking to exceed that figure through improved participation and additional innovations.

The economic benefits of a major festival can extend well beyond ticketing and organised events. Hotels, restaurants, transport operators, food vendors, costume designers, entertainers and other small businesses may benefit when visitors arrive in large numbers.

Increased tourist traffic can also support local employment and create opportunities for young people working in the creative industries.

However, achieving higher economic returns will depend on more than the popularity of the festival. Effective planning, security, transportation, accommodation, sanitation and transparent financial management will be important in ensuring that increased attendance translates into meaningful benefits for residents and businesses.

Culture, Unity and Shared Humanity

The carnival’s stated theme, “Rethinking Our Collective Destiny,” places unity, equality and shared humanity at the centre of the celebration.

Onah said the festival continued to provide a creative platform for children and young people to showcase their abilities while promoting peaceful coexistence.

He explained that successive editions had communicated different messages, including “Season of Sweetness”, “Our Shared Prosperity” and “Traces of Time”, the latter marking the carnival’s 20th anniversary.

The current theme reflects the organisers’ desire to use cultural celebration to promote a sense of common identity and collective responsibility.

Carnival Calabar’s combination of music, costumes, dance and artistic performances provides an opportunity to showcase the cultural richness of Cross River State to a wider audience. Its ability to attract national and international participants could further strengthen its position within Nigeria’s tourism and entertainment sectors.

Digital Innovation Could Expand International Reach

The introduction of online voting reflects a broader effort to make Carnival Calabar more accessible to people who cannot attend in person.

Digital participation could encourage supporters to identify with particular bands, follow festival activities and engage with performances from different locations. It may also help organisers develop a more reliable understanding of audience interests and participation patterns.

For participating bands, a well-managed digital system could provide opportunities to attract supporters, promote their creative work and develop new sources of income.

Nevertheless, the success of the initiative will depend on public awareness, the reliability of the voting platform and confidence in the process. Organisers will need to communicate clear voting rules, protect participants’ information and establish safeguards against manipulation.

A transparent voting system would help ensure that digital participation strengthens the competition rather than creates disputes over results.

What the Initiative Means for Nigeria’s Tourism Industry

Carnival Calabar’s proposed expansion offers a wider lesson for Nigeria’s tourism industry: cultural events can become stronger economic assets when heritage is combined with effective organisation, technology and private-sector participation.

Nigeria possesses numerous festivals and cultural attractions capable of drawing visitors. However, transforming these assets into sustainable tourism revenue requires consistent promotion, adequate infrastructure and services that encourage visitors to stay longer and spend more within host communities.

Cross River State’s approach could provide useful lessons for other states seeking to develop cultural tourism. Digital engagement may help festivals reach wider audiences, but it must complement, rather than replace, the quality of the physical visitor experience.

The government and festival organisers will also need to demonstrate how the economic benefits are distributed among local businesses, creative workers and communities.

Carnival Calabar’s move towards online registration and voting signals an effort to combine cultural celebration with digital participation and economic development.

With an estimated ₦19 billion in socio-economic impact reported for the preceding edition, the organisers face the challenge of turning that reported performance into a foundation for sustained growth.

The ultimate measure of success will not be the introduction of technology alone, but whether the initiative attracts more participants, strengthens confidence in the competition, creates opportunities for local businesses and delivers lasting benefits to Cross River State.

If effectively implemented, the digital strategy could help Carnival Calabar broaden its international reach while preserving the cultural identity and communal spirit that underpin its appeal.
