A former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, will remain in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) until March 19, 2026, following a court order permitting the anti-corruption agency to continue its investigation into corruption allegations against him.

The order, granted by a Magistrate Court in Abuja, extends El-Rufai’s detention for an additional 14 days, pending the conclusion of investigations that could lead either to his arraignment in court or his release on administrative bail.
Akahi News learnt that the former governor was first arrested by the ICPC on February 18, 2026, shortly after his release from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which had detained him two days earlier over similar allegations.
Sequence of Arrests and Investigations
The ICPC had initially obtained a 14-day remand order on February 19, allowing investigators to keep El-Rufai in custody while examining multiple petitions reportedly filed against him.
That initial remand order expired on March 5, but investigators returned to court seeking an extension.
Magistrate Okechukwu John Akweke, sitting at the Magistrate Court in Bwari, Abuja, granted the request and approved the continued detention of the former governor for another 14 days, allowing the commission additional time to complete its investigation.
The application for the extension was presented by ICPC counsel Osuobeni Akponimisingha, who asked the court to permit the commission to retain El-Rufai in custody while it continued to investigate allegations relating to money laundering and abuse of office.
In his brief ruling, the magistrate stated:
“Application granted as prayed. The Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is hereby ordered to re-detain the respondent for additional 14 days to enable the commission conclude investigation activities.”
Allegations and Ongoing Probes
Investigators are said to be examining a series of petitions connected to El-Rufai’s tenure as governor of Kaduna State.
Sources familiar with the investigation indicated that the extension of the remand order may have been influenced by what officials described as the former governor’s alleged lack of cooperation during questioning.
Beyond the corruption allegations, Akahi News gathered that the Department of State Services (DSS) is also reportedly pursuing a separate matter involving allegations that El-Rufai may have been involved in the wiretapping of communications belonging to the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed the full details of the allegations, but the investigation continues across multiple security and anti-corruption agencies.
What Happens Next?
By March 19, 2026, investigators are expected to complete their findings and determine the next course of action.
Legal experts say the possible outcomes include:
- The filing of formal criminal charges leading to arraignment in court
- The granting of administrative bail if investigators require additional time
- Or the release of the former governor if insufficient evidence is found
For now, the case remains under active investigation.
Power, Accountability, and the Question of Justice
The detention of a former state governor inevitably raises deeper reflections about governance, accountability, and the nature of justice in democratic societies.
When powerful political figures are investigated, many citizens see it as proof that the rule of law is functioning.
Others, however, question whether such actions are always purely legal or sometimes shaped by political rivalries.
This leads to a broader philosophical question:
Is the true strength of a democracy measured by how it treats its ordinary citizens — or by how it holds its most powerful leaders accountable?
Another question follows naturally:
When allegations emerge against influential figures, how can societies ensure that justice remains both firm and fair, free from political manipulation yet strong enough to confront corruption?
As Nigerians watch developments closely, the coming days may determine not only the legal fate of a former governor but also how the nation continues to grapple with the enduring challenge of transparency and accountability in public office.
