Today’s liturgy places before us two difficult but powerful passages of Scripture. Both reveal the seriousness of our choices in faith and the consequences that follow when we deal with God without proper understanding.

The First Reading: Judges 11:29-39a

We hear the story of Jephthah, who made a rash vow before God. Out of desperation and zeal, he promised to sacrifice as a burnt offering whatever came out of his house to meet him if he won the battle. Tragically, his only daughter came out to greet him. Out of misplaced understanding of faith, he kept his vow, and the girl was sacrificed.

This passage is painful, but it teaches us three important lessons:

  1. The danger of rash promises to God – Our God does not delight in human destruction. Jephthah’s vow shows us how human pride and a lack of discernment can lead to devastating consequences. We must always remember that God values obedience, mercy, and love above sacrifice (Hosea 6:6).
  2. The importance of proper knowledge of God – Jephthah lacked sound understanding of God’s law. His act shows how ignorance of God’s will can lead us into errors in our spiritual journey.
  3. Faith must be guided by wisdom – Zeal without discernment is dangerous. Our faith must be rooted in God’s word, guided by prayer, and enlightened by the teaching of the Church.

The Gospel Reading: Matthew 22:1-14

Jesus tells the parable of the wedding feast. The king invited many to the banquet of his son, but those first invited refused to come. Some ignored the invitation, while others treated the messengers badly. Finally, the king opened the invitation to everyone, both the good and the bad, but one man entered without the proper wedding garment and was cast out.

The parable highlights several themes:

  1. God’s invitation is universal – Like the king, God invites all people to the banquet of eternal life. His mercy is wide, and no one is excluded.
  2. Refusal to respond brings consequences – Those who rejected the invitation symbolise the hardness of heart that resists God. Their rejection is not about ignorance, but wilful refusal.
  3. Proper disposition matters – The wedding garment symbolises the inner readiness of heart. It represents repentance, holiness, and living in grace. Accepting God’s invitation requires not just presence, but transformation of life.
  4. Grace must not be taken for granted – God’s mercy is generous, but it demands responsibility. To say “yes” to God means clothing ourselves in Christ (Galatians 3:27).

Beloved in Christ…

Both readings remind us that faith is not about empty rituals, rash words, or casual presence before God. True faith requires discernment, responsibility, and conversion of heart. Jephthah teaches us the danger of zeal without wisdom, while the Gospel teaches us the danger of entering God’s presence without true inner preparation.

God does not want reckless promises or half-hearted followers. He desires people who listen, discern, and respond in love.

Practical Lessons for Us Today

  • Do not make careless vows to God; rather, let your prayer be guided by humility and trust.
  • Take God’s invitation seriously — every Mass, every moment of grace is a call to the heavenly banquet.
  • Examine your “wedding garment”: Is your heart clothed in charity, forgiveness, purity, and faith?
  • Be both zealous and wise — zeal without wisdom can destroy, but wisdom guided by love builds life.
