The Olu of Warri, His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, has applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the establishment of a new 80-bed maternal and child healthcare facility in Ugbuwangue, Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State. The state-of-the-art hospital, known as the Renewed Hope Mother and Child Specialist Hospital, Ugbuwangue, was officially commissioned on Tuesday, further reinforcing the Federal Government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery across Nigeria.

The hospital, constructed through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), was formally handed over to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, for management.

In his remarks, the Olu of Warri described the facility as a transformative project that would significantly enhance healthcare access for women and children in the community. He stressed that health remained the foundation of sustainable wealth and prosperity.

“Without health, there is no wealth. Wealth is meaningless without health,” the monarch declared. “The hospital, without any doubt, will ultimately change the Ugbuwangue community. It is therefore well cherished and appreciated.”

He, however, urged residents to protect and maintain the facility, emphasising that unrestricted access must be guaranteed at all times, especially during emergencies. “The access must be clear all the time, 24/7, because cases can arise where people will have to get here in a hurry, and there should be no hindrance on their way at all,” he cautioned.

Governor Oborevwori Lauds Renewed Hope Initiative

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who also spoke at the commissioning, described the project as “a beacon of hope” for Delta State and an important contribution to the realisation of his administration’s M.O.RE Agenda.

He highlighted the hospital as a major stride towards achieving the health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those targeting maternal and child health. “This project is not just a physical structure; it is a critical step forward in achieving health-related sustainable development goals. By investing in healthcare, we are investing in the future of our state,” the governor stated.

FG Reaffirms Commitment to SDGs

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, noted that the Ugbuwangue hospital is part of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises social inclusion, equity, and sustainable national development.

“What makes today even more special is that this project is being commissioned under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a vision grounded in social inclusion, equity, and the acceleration of national development outcomes,” she said.

She further explained that the project represents a vital milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards achieving Goal 3 of the SDGs – good health and well-being for all.

A Lifeline for Warri South

The Chairman of Warri South Local Government Council, Comrade Isaac Weyinmi Agbateyiniro, hailed the initiative as “a live demonstration of the Renewed Hope Agenda in Warri.” He pointed out that the facility would help reduce maternal and child mortality rates in the area, a longstanding public health challenge in the region.

The Acting Medical Director of FMC Asaba, Dr. Ekeneam Omo, who received the hospital on behalf of the centre, pledged that patients would enjoy the highest standards of care. “Every patient will be treated with dignity, empathy, and excellence,” he assured.

He revealed that the facility is equipped with emergency, paediatric, neonatal, and labour wards, in addition to a modern theatre, intensive care unit, laboratory, consulting rooms, staff quarters, and an alternative power supply system. However, he appealed for additional land and advanced equipment such as digital X-ray and CT scan machines to further expand the hospital’s capacity.

Healthcare Transformation for the Niger Delta

The commissioning of the Renewed Hope Mother and Child Specialist Hospital marks a significant milestone for healthcare delivery in the Niger Delta region. By providing specialised care for mothers and children, the hospital is expected to ease the burden on overstretched medical facilities in Delta State while setting a new standard for community-based health interventions.

For residents of Ugbuwangue and neighbouring communities, the facility is more than a hospital — it is a symbol of renewed hope, healthier futures, and a stronger healthcare system for generations to come.
