Daily Catholic Reflection by Joseph Iyaji – Love as the Greatest Commandment in Our Christian Journey (Friday, 22nd August 2025)
1st Reading: Ruth 1:1, 3-6, 14b-16, 22
Gospel Reading: Matthew 22:34-40
In the first reading, we encounter the moving story of Ruth’s loyalty and faithfulness. Despite Naomi’s losses and deep sorrow, Ruth makes a remarkable choice: “Where you go, I will go; where you live, I will live; your people shall be my people, and your God my God.” Her love is not based on convenience or gain, but on deep commitment and selflessness. This shows us that genuine love is more than feelings—it is a decision to remain faithful even in trials.

In the Gospel, Jesus brings all the commandments into one foundation: love of God and love of neighbour. He reminds us that true religion is not built on complicated rules, but on sincere love lived out daily. To love God means to place Him first in our lives, and to love our neighbour means to act with kindness, compassion, and justice towards others.
When we put both readings together, Ruth’s devotion becomes a living example of the greatest commandment. Her sacrificial and unwavering love is the kind of love Jesus asks us to show God and one another.
Today, let us reflect:
- Do I truly love God above everything else?
- Do I love my neighbour even when it costs me something?
- Can my life reflect the loyalty, faith, and love of Ruth?
May God grant us the grace to love Him with all our heart, soul, and mind, and to love our neighbour as ourselves. Amen.
