Readings: 1 Thessalonians 3:7–13; Matthew 24:42–51
Strengthened in Faith and Watching in Readiness
Today’s first reading from Saint Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians reminds us of the deep consolation and joy that comes when we remain steadfast in faith, even in the midst of trials. Paul acknowledges the suffering of the Christian community, yet he finds strength and encouragement knowing that they continue to persevere in Christ. His prayer is a tender one — that their love may increase and that their hearts remain blameless before God.
In our present world where faith is constantly tested by uncertainty, challenges, and daily struggles, Paul’s words speak to us directly. They remind us that fidelity to God, no matter the storm, not only strengthens our own souls but also encourages others who witness our perseverance.
The Call to Watchfulness
In the Gospel reading, Jesus warns His disciples to “stay awake, for you do not know the day your Lord is coming.” This passage carries a sense of urgency and seriousness. The parable of the faithful and wise servant is contrasted with that of the careless servant who thinks he has time and delays his duties. The message is clear: true discipleship requires constant vigilance, readiness, and commitment to fulfilling the mission entrusted to us.
This Gospel is not meant to instill fear but to awaken responsibility. As Christians, we are called not to live carelessly, but with a sense of purpose, knowing that each day is a gift and an opportunity to serve. The faithful servant is found at his duty when the Master returns — may this be the story of our lives when Christ comes for us.
Living the Message Today
To live today’s readings, we are invited to:
- Persevere in Faith: Like the Thessalonians, we must hold firmly to Christ even when it seems difficult. Our endurance strengthens the body of Christ.
- Grow in Love: Paul’s prayer that love may increase challenges us to go beyond mere belief into action — to love more, forgive more, and give more.
- Stay Awake Spiritually: Every action, decision, and word should reflect a life lived in readiness, for the Lord may come at any moment.
When we cultivate these virtues, our lives will not be shaken by fear or uncertainty but will stand firm in Christ’s grace.
