Delta Police Command Issues Crucial Security Advisory on SIM Card Protection

The Delta State Police Command has released an important security alert, warning residents to be more vigilant about their mobile phones and, more importantly, their SIM cards. According to the command, the rising trend of banking fraud linked to stolen SIM cards necessitates urgent public awareness and caution.

Spokesperson for the command, SP Daffé Bright, emphasised that armed robbers, pickpockets, and phone snatchers are no longer primarily after the devices themselves but the vital information embedded within SIM cards. This information, he noted, could grant criminals access to victims’ bank accounts and other personal data, potentially leading to devastating financial losses.

“Protect Your SIM, Protect Your Money”

The advisory, issued on Monday, urged residents to take proactive measures to secure their SIM cards through PIN protection and to immediately contact network providers in cases of theft to block unauthorised access.

“Your phone can be replaced; your money and private data cannot be easily recovered once compromised,” SP Daffé stated. “It is high time the public took deliberate steps to safeguard their SIM cards because criminals have shifted their focus to sensitive banking details linked to them.”

Growing Cases of SIM-Related Bank Fraud

Akahi News learnt that there has been a surge in reports involving stolen phones used for unauthorised bank withdrawals across the state. Security operatives believe many of these incidents could have been prevented if SIM cards had been properly locked or reported for deactivation promptly.

The command advised all residents to set strong SIM PINs, avoid storing sensitive bank information in text messages or notes on their phones, and regularly monitor bank accounts for suspicious activity.

Call for Public Cooperation

The Delta State Police Command further appealed for public cooperation, stressing that awareness and vigilance remain the first line of defence against emerging cybercrime tactics.

“The police are committed to fighting all forms of crime, but citizens must equally take personal responsibility to protect themselves,” the statement concluded.

As incidents of cyber-enabled crime continue to evolve, authorities are working on closer collaborations with banks and telecom providers to curb financial fraud arising from mobile theft.
