Government Cracks Down on Cultism in Egor LGA

The Governor Monday Okpebholo-led Edo State Government has demolished a bungalow allegedly belonging to a suspected cult leader, said to be a member of the Maphite group. The property, located in Egbaen community along Upper Siluko Road, Egor Local Government Area, was reportedly used as a base for cult initiation rites, ritual practices, and clandestine gatherings.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, the operation was carried out by the Edo State Special Security Squad, codenamed “Operation Flush Out Cultists and Kidnappers.” The exercise was executed in collaboration with security agencies and community stakeholders, reflecting the state’s renewed commitment to ending cultism and criminal activities.

The coordinator of the security squad, Idemudia Noah, confirmed that the demolished building was linked to one Marvellous Adetarami, a suspected leader of the Maphite cult group. Noah disclosed that the bungalow had been converted into a shrine and meeting point for illegal activities.

Defiance After Initial Sealing of Property

Akahi News learnt that the security squad had earlier sealed the premises following intelligence reports of ritual practices and cult initiation ceremonies. However, despite the official closure, fresh intelligence revealed that the suspected cultists resumed their activities under the cover of darkness.

“We got credible information that the suspected cult leader Marvellous Adetarami and his members still gathered in the sealed bungalow, where the shrine was discovered,” Noah revealed.

Community Reaction

Residents of Egbaen community reportedly expressed relief and joy at the demolition, noting that they had lived in fear due to the suspect’s activities. The removal of the structure, they said, marked a decisive step towards restoring peace and safety in the area.

The Edo State Government reiterated its commitment to working with security agencies and communities to ensure that cultism, kidnapping, and related crimes are eradicated across the state.
