A prominent Labour Party (LP) member in Enugu State, Chief Ogochukwu Onyema, has hinted at a possible switch to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), signalling a potential political realignment in the state ahead of the 2027 elections. The declaration comes amid speculation surrounding former LP presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi’s future political moves.

Speaking in Enugu during an interview, Onyema described the SDP as an “emerging party”, noting its constitution discourages litigation among members. He stated, “The party has a constitution that does not allow its members to go to court, which is a progressive approach to party politics in Nigeria.”
Commendation for Gov. Mbah’s Leadership
The Ohanaeze chieftain also used the occasion to laud Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, whom he described as a close friend. Onyema praised Mbah’s leadership style, describing him as proactive and strategic.
“If you want me to tell you about His Excellency, Ndubisi Mbah, I say to you that whoever does the way I do, I’ll call my good friend. I admire his leadership style and each time I see his choice of projects, I smile within myself. I say this is a proactive man. This man is a man of strategic thinking. This is a man that is futuristic,” Onyema remarked.
He acknowledged Mbah’s developmental initiatives in the state, emphasising their alignment with progressive governance and visionary leadership.
Political Journey and PDP Disappointments
Chief Onyema, a former PDP senatorial aspirant for Enugu West, recounted his political journey and challenges within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Despite three attempts to secure nominations for both the House of Representatives and the Senate, Onyema said he was repeatedly denied the opportunity to consummate his political ambitions.
“I was in PDP when we won the election that produced Peter Mbah, and I said I am leaving PDP. I said they should not give me an appointment, let me chart my own course,” he noted, hinting at his continued pursuit of meaningful political engagement outside the PDP framework.
While Onyema did not openly declare his ambitions for the 2027 elections, his comments underscore a potential strategic move that could reshape political alliances in Enugu State, especially if Peter Obi decides to align with SDP.
Observers believe Onyema’s political shift could influence other LP members and realign support bases in the southeastern state, signalling a period of heightened political activity and speculation.
