Father Adeyemi Warns Against Shifting Blame in Sunday Homily

Rev. Father Peter Oluseyi Adeyemi Delivers Thought-Provoking Homily at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Pro-Cathedral Church

Ile-Ife, June 9, 2024 – Rev. Father Peter Oluseyi Adeyemi, the esteemed parish priest of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Pro-Cathedral Church in Lagere, Ile-Ife, delivered a profound and insightful homily this Sunday, leaving the congregation with much to ponder about their spiritual lives and moral responsibilities.

During his homily, Father Adeyemi delved into the deeper meanings of biblical texts and the importance of personal accountability. He began by clarifying a common misconception about the term “serpent” in Latin, explaining that it does not refer merely to the snake as we know it today but signifies knowledge and wisdom. This distinction set the stage for his central message on responsibility and self-righteousness.

Using the story of Adam and Eve as an illustrative tool, Father Adeyemi urged his parishioners to avoid the human tendency to shift blame. In the Genesis narrative, Adam and Eve each attempt to deflect responsibility for their actions, a behavior that Father Adeyemi warned against. He emphasized that true growth and spiritual maturity come from acknowledging one’s mistakes and taking responsibility for them, rather than succumbing to the easier path of blame-shifting.

“Self-righteousness is not encouraging in the sight of God,” Father Adeyemi stated emphatically. He expounded on this by drawing parallels to the behavior of the scribes during Jesus’s time. The scribes, as he noted, often sought to undermine Jesus, accusing him falsely of being possessed by an evil spirit. In this context, Father Adeyemi cautioned his congregation against judging others harshly and unfairly, warning that such behavior mirrors the actions of the scribes and is displeasing to God.

Father Adeyemi’s homily also included a stern admonition against sinning against the Holy Spirit, specifically highlighting the dangers of lying and engaging in fraudulent activities. Citing Isaiah 63:10, he reminded the faithful, “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit.” He further referenced Acts 5:1-3, recounting the story of Ananias and Sapphira, to underscore that lying is a grave sin against the Holy Spirit.

One of the key elements of Father Adeyemi’s message was his exploration of why sins against the Holy Spirit are considered unforgivable. He outlined two primary reasons: obstinacy in sin and despair.

Firstly, he explained obstinacy as a stubborn persistence in wrongdoing, a refusal to acknowledge one’s sins or seek forgiveness. This hardened attitude prevents the sinner from being open to God’s grace and mercy.

Secondly, Father Adeyemi addressed despair, the loss of hope in God’s mercy. He contrasted the despair of Judas Iscariot, who gave up and ended his life in hopelessness, with the repentance of Peter, who sought forgiveness after denying Jesus. He encouraged his congregation to emulate Peter and Thomas, who, despite their initial failings, turned back to God and found reconciliation. “Do not give up,” he urged, “but ask and seek for reconciliation from God.”

Father Adeyemi’s homily was not merely a sermon but a call to action for all present. It was a reminder of the need for humility, the courage to take responsibility for one’s actions, and the importance of seeking God’s forgiveness with a sincere heart. His words resonated deeply with many in the congregation, who left the service with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to living out their faith with integrity and accountability.
