Funding Approved to Kick-Start Operations of Newly Established Institutions
The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved grants of N2 billion each for the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal Polytechnic in Abuja and the Federal University of Science and Technology in Epe, Lagos State.

The funds are expected to support the take-off operations of the two newly established higher institutions as they begin academic and administrative activities.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, disclosed the development during the inauguration ceremony of the newly appointed leaders of the institutions.
Akahi News gathered that the financial support is intended to enable the institutions to establish their basic operational structures, including administrative systems and academic programmes.
New Institutional Leaders Inaugurated
During the event, Prof. Nosiru Onibon was formally inaugurated as the Rector of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal Polytechnic in Abuja.
Similarly, Prof. Adeola Oshikoya assumed office as the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Science and Technology located in Epe, Lagos State.
In addition, Dr. Angela Ajala was inaugurated as the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education.
According to the Minister of Education, the appointments reflect the government’s commitment to strengthening leadership across Nigeria’s higher education system.
Akahi News learnt that the newly inaugurated officials were tasked with laying strong foundations for their respective institutions as they begin operations.
Expanding Access to Education and Innovation
Dr. Alausa emphasised that the creation of the new institutions forms part of the federal government’s strategy to expand access to higher education while strengthening Nigeria’s capacity in science, technology, and innovation.
He noted that the institutions are expected to focus on critical areas that support national development.
These areas include renewable energy, climate change research, disaster management, and other emerging fields relevant to modern technological advancement.
According to the minister, the strategic locations of the institutions were carefully selected to take advantage of regional economic strengths and available human resources.
He stressed that the expansion of educational infrastructure remains essential for Nigeria’s long-term development.
Leadership Responsibilities for Institutional Growth
While addressing the newly appointed leaders, the minister urged them to demonstrate strong leadership and vision as they guide the institutions through their early stages of development.
He reminded them that the responsibility placed on them goes beyond administrative duties and extends to shaping the future of students who will pass through the institutions.
The minister also emphasised the importance of building academic cultures that promote innovation, research excellence, and national service.
Observers note that the success of newly established institutions often depends heavily on the quality of leadership during their formative years.
Education as a Tool for National Transformation
Nigeria’s higher education system continues to face challenges related to capacity, funding, and infrastructure. However, the establishment of new institutions is often seen as part of broader efforts to expand learning opportunities for the country’s growing population.
Akahi News gathered that the government expects the new institutions to contribute significantly to the training of skilled professionals capable of addressing national and global challenges.
Yet beyond infrastructure and funding lies a deeper reflection about the purpose of education itself.
Is education merely a pathway to employment, or is it a broader tool for shaping society and solving humanity’s most pressing challenges?
If universities and polytechnics are built to advance knowledge, how well do they prepare students to think critically, innovate responsibly, and serve the public good?
And perhaps most importantly, when a nation invests billions in educational institutions, how can those institutions ensure that the investment truly transforms the lives of students and the future of the country?
For many observers, the answers to these questions may ultimately determine whether Nigeria’s expanding educational system becomes a powerful engine for national development.
