Federal Grand Jury Subpoenas New York AG Letitia James Over Trump Fraud Judgment
The New York Attorney General, Letitia James, has been subpoenaed in connection with a federal grand jury investigation into her office’s landmark $454 million civil fraud judgment against former U.S. President Donald Trump, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The subpoenas, issued by the Albany U.S. Attorney’s Office, follow an FBI probe into possible misconduct during the high-profile case, which concluded earlier this year. One subpoena reportedly seeks detailed information about James’ handling of the Trump civil fraud trial — a case centred on claims that Trump and his company inflated asset values to obtain favourable loans and insurance terms. The trial resulted in one of the largest civil penalties ever imposed on a U.S. politician.
A second subpoena is said to concern James’ separate and ongoing investigation into the National Rifle Association (NRA), in which she has accused senior officials of financial mismanagement in a long-running legal battle.
It remains unclear whether the grand jury is also examining recent, unverified allegations — circulated in some media reports — that James committed mortgage fraud on properties in Brooklyn and Virginia.
The Justice Department’s action represents a rare instance of a state attorney general facing federal scrutiny over prosecutorial conduct in a politically charged case. The Trump judgment has been fiercely criticised by Republicans, who claim James, a Democrat, is pursuing a politically motivated vendetta ahead of the 2024 election cycle.
James has staunchly defended her work, insisting that “no one — not even a former president — is above the law” and stressing that the Trump case was grounded in substantial evidence of fraud.
