A major fire outbreak has damaged the top floor of a three-storey residential building in the Ketu-Ikosi area of Lagos State, leaving two firefighters hospitalised after they collapsed while battling the inferno. Emergency responders, however, succeeded in preventing the blaze from spreading to neighbouring buildings, while no civilian casualty was recorded.

Akahi News gathered that the incident occurred at a residential property on Ademola Taiwo Street, where emergency teams responded promptly after receiving reports of the fire. Preliminary investigations indicate that the blaze was triggered by an electrical surge originating from a prepaid electricity meter before rapidly spreading to the upper floor of the building.

According to emergency authorities, personnel from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service worked together to contain the fire. During the operation, two firefighters reportedly collapsed due to the intensity of the rescue effort and were immediately evacuated to a trauma centre, where they are currently receiving treatment and are in stable condition. Fortunately, all residents escaped safely, and no loss of life was reported.

The incident once again highlights the growing danger posed by faulty electrical installations in many Nigerian homes. Electrical surges, overloaded circuits, ageing wiring and poorly maintained prepaid meters remain among the leading causes of residential fires across the country. Regular inspection and maintenance of electrical systems should no longer be treated as optional but as an essential safety measure.

The collapse of two firefighters during the operation also draws attention to the difficult and hazardous conditions under which emergency personnel work daily.
