By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
Dr Clement Alegu has joined other well-meaning leaders and stakeholders in extending warm felicitations to the people of Ukelle Nation as they celebrate the 2025 Likpeh Cultural Festival, widely regarded as the New Yam Festival.

In a goodwill message made available to journalists, Dr Alegu expressed profound joy over the successful hosting of this year’s cultural event, describing it as a “unique celebration of heritage, unity, and gratitude” that continues to strengthen the bonds among Ukelle sons and daughters both at home and in the diaspora.
A Festival of Heritage and Thanksgiving
Akahi News learnt that the Likpeh Cultural Festival is held yearly on the 16th of September. It marks the end of the farming season and the beginning of a new agricultural cycle, with yam being the symbolic centrepiece of the festivities.
Dr Alegu emphasised that the festival is more than just a harvest celebration. He described it as a reflection of the cultural pride, resilience, and communal spirit of the Ukelle people.
“This festival is a reminder of our shared history, our resilience as a people, and the importance of unity in fostering growth and development,” he stated. “As we celebrate this year’s festival, may it usher in renewed peace, abundant blessings, and opportunities for all Ukelle communities.”
Promoting Unity and Development
Akahi News gathered that the 2025 edition of the Likpeh Cultural Festival attracted dignitaries, traditional rulers, political leaders, and guests from across Yala Local Government Area and beyond. The event featured traditional dances, masquerades, music performances, and communal feasting, all aimed at preserving the cultural identity of the Ukelle people while fostering social cohesion.
Dr Alegu used the occasion to call for greater unity and collaboration among community leaders, government agencies, and the private sector to accelerate infrastructural development, education, and youth empowerment initiatives across the Ukelle region.
A Symbol of Cultural Pride
The Likpeh Festival, celebrated annually on 16th September, remains one of the most significant cultural events in Cross River State. It serves as both a thanksgiving ceremony for a bountiful harvest and a platform for cultural preservation, where younger generations learn about the values, customs, and traditions passed down by their forefathers.
Dr Alegu concluded his message by wishing the people of Ukelle Nation continued peace, progress, and harmony, stressing that a united and culturally conscious community is better positioned for meaningful development.
