Wanted Bandit Leader Accused of Mosque Massacre Attends Government Peace Dialogue
A notorious bandit leader allegedly responsible for the killing of over 30 worshippers in a recent mosque attack was in attendance at a government-brokered peace meeting on Sunday, sparking outrage and raising serious questions about security policy in the region.

Babaro, a kingpin long terrorizing communities in Kankara and Malumfashi, was identified at the dialogue session in Faskari just days after being accused of masterminding the gruesome assault on the Mantau Mosque in Malumfashi.
The meeting, convened to address escalating clashes between armed herders and farming communities, was attended by traditional rulers, community leaders, security representatives, and herder group leaders. However, the presence of Babaro—a figure on security watchlists for years for kidnappings, extortion, and deadly raids—at the high-level forum has drawn fierce criticism.
Security expert Zagazola Makama confirmed the bandit leader’s attendance on social media, highlighting the stark contrast between the state’s pursuit of peace and its failure to apprehend individuals wanted for severe crimes.
The incident has intensified the debate around the use of negotiations and amnesty programs in Nigeria’s northwest. While proponents see dialogue as essential to ending violence, critics argue it grants legitimacy to violent actors without ensuring accountability, perpetuating impunity and eroding public trust.
As of Sunday evening, the Katsina State government had not issued an official statement regarding Babaro’s presence at the meeting or his wanted status. For many residents, the event has become a painful symbol of a conflict where justice for victims appears to be secondary to fragile peace efforts.
