i. True Love for Christ Demands Persistent Seeking

The first reading describes a lover searching tirelessly for the beloved until the search ends in joyful discovery. This imagery perfectly reflects Mary Magdalene’s determination. Even after Jesus’ crucifixion, she refused to abandon Him. She arrived at the tomb early in the morning, despite her grief and uncertainty.

Many Christians today seek God only when life is comfortable. Once difficulties arise, they easily become discouraged. Today’s readings teach that genuine love remains faithful even during moments of silence, pain and confusion. Those who continue searching for God in prayer, worship and righteous living will eventually experience His presence.

ii. Tears Can Become the Beginning of Divine Joy

Mary Magdalene stood outside the tomb weeping. She believed all hope had been lost. Yet, while she was still crying, Jesus appeared to her personally.

This reminds believers that moments of sorrow do not always signal God’s absence. Sometimes, God is closest when human hope seems exhausted. Many people in Nigeria and across the world face economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment and personal disappointments. Today’s Gospel assures them that God has not forgotten them. The darkest morning can become the brightest testimony.

Christians should therefore avoid losing hope because God’s intervention often comes unexpectedly.

iii. God Knows Each Person by Name

The turning point in the Gospel came when Jesus simply called, “Mary.” Immediately she recognised Him.

This beautiful encounter teaches that God relates with every individual personally. Faith is not merely about belonging to a church or participating in religious activities; it is about having a personal relationship with Christ.

Every believer should strive to know God’s voice through prayer, Scripture, obedience and daily fellowship. Those who listen attentively will recognise His guidance even amid life’s distractions.

iv. Every Encounter with Christ Carries a Mission

After revealing Himself, Jesus immediately entrusted Mary Magdalene with a mission: to announce His resurrection to the disciples.

Christianity is not only about receiving blessings but also about becoming witnesses of God’s goodness. Every Christian has a responsibility to spread hope, truth, peace and love within the family, workplace, school and society.

In a world increasingly filled with misinformation, hatred and moral confusion, believers must become courageous ambassadors of Christ through both words and actions.

v. No Past Is Greater Than God’s Grace

Mary Magdalene’s life demonstrates the transforming power of God’s mercy. Rather than being remembered for her past, she became honoured as the first witness of the Resurrection.

This offers hope to everyone who feels burdened by previous mistakes. God is more interested in what His grace can make a person become than in what that person once was.

Today’s feast encourages Christians never to define themselves or others by past failures. Genuine repentance, faith and commitment can open the door to a completely new beginning.

Final Reflection

The Feast of Saint Mary Magdalene reminds us that sincere love always seeks Christ, faithful hearts eventually find Him, and every authentic encounter with the risen Lord transforms lives and creates new missionaries.

Like Mary Magdalene, Christians should remain faithful during difficult seasons, trust God’s timing, listen for His voice, and boldly proclaim His goodness wherever they find themselves.

As Nigeria and the wider world continue to face numerous challenges, today’s readings encourage everyone to remain hopeful. The risen Christ still calls His people by name, wipes away their tears, and sends them out as messengers of hope to a troubled world.
