“Forget Social Media Support”: Intense Debate Surfaces Ahead of 2027 Nigerian Presidential Election

As Nigeria steadily approaches the 2027 general elections, a growing debate has resurfaced concerning the true power of social media in determining electoral outcomes. The discussion has been reignited following comments from various political figures and passionate exchanges among citizens.

Recently, popular Nigerian blogger, Tunde Ednut, declared his unwavering support for Labour Party leader, Mr. Peter Obi, calling on Nigerians, particularly the youth, to rally behind Obi once again if he contests in 2027. According to Ednut, Peter Obi represents a path towards building the Nigeria of the people’s dreams, free from corruption and bad governance.

However, this optimism has sparked counterarguments emphasizing the limitations of social media influence in Nigerian politics. Critics argue that while online support may be vibrant and energetic, actual election victories depend heavily on grassroots political structures, strong party machinery, and electoral agents who can secure and protect votes at polling units and collation centers across the country.

Further fueling the debate, former Rivers State Governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, described Peter Obi as a “social media candidate” in a previous statement, suggesting that Obi’s popularity online may not necessarily translate into success at the polls.
