Legal Proceedings Set for March 24, 2026

After spending more than a month in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, is scheduled to be formally arraigned in Kaduna courts on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. The arraignment comes on the heels of charges filed against el-Rufai, who is also a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), at both the Kaduna division of the Federal High Court and a High Court of Kaduna State.

Akahi News gathered that el-Rufai has been in ICPC custody since his arrest on February 18, shortly after his release by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Initially, a magistrate court in Bwari ordered his detention for two weeks to facilitate investigations—a remand later extended until March 5. On March 18, the ICPC filed formal charges in both federal and state courts, prompting the upcoming arraignment.

Scope of Charges and Co-Accused

According to John Odey, Head of Media and Public Communications at ICPC, el-Rufai will be arraigned alongside Joel Adoga at the Federal High Court, Kaduna Judicial Division, in case number FHC/KD/73/2026. Charges range from conversion and possession of public property to money laundering.

Simultaneously, in a separate case before the Kaduna State High Court (KDH/KAD/ICPC/01/26), el-Rufai is to be arraigned alongside Amadu Sule (LEDA). Charges in this matter include abuse of office, fraud, intent to commit fraud, and conferring undue advantage, among others. The ICPC has emphasised its commitment to due process and the rule of law throughout the proceedings.

Akahi News notes that the specific date for the State High Court arraignment will be communicated by the court in due course.

Forensic Examination and Evidence Collection

In preparation for the trials, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja granted the ICPC permission to access and analyse electronic devices recovered from el-Rufai’s Abuja residence. The ruling authorised inspection, forensic examination, and data extraction from a wide range of devices, including Sony, Toshiba, Samsung, and Apple storage systems, various mobile phones (including Nokia, Blackberry, and Google IDEOS), flash drives, a Remarkable tablet, and other memory devices.

The court’s order allows the commission to examine public documents, WhatsApp conversations, text messages, pictures, and call logs relevant to the ongoing investigation. The search and seizure had previously been conducted in the presence of el-Rufai’s wife and son, ensuring procedural transparency.

Overlapping Allegations and Political Implications

The case coincides with separate charges brought by the Department of State Services (DSS), alleging that el-Rufai unlawfully wiretapped the phone lines of the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu. While this case is yet to proceed due to ICPC’s ongoing investigation, el-Rufai has consistently denied all allegations, asserting that his prosecution is politically motivated.
