Iyabo Obasanjo Returns to Politics, Declares APC Her ‘Natural Home’ Ahead of 2027 Elections

Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has formally re-entered partisan politics after more than a decade away, declaring the All Progressives Congress (APC) as her political “natural home” as preparations gradually begin ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Akahi News gathered that the former senator made the disclosure during a radio interview, where she explained that her decision followed extensive consultations with political associates and supporters who had reportedly encouraged her return to public service.

Iyabo Obasanjo, who previously represented Ogun Central Senatorial District between 2007 and 2011 and also served as Ogun State Commissioner for Health, stepped away from active politics following her defeat in the 2011 senatorial election. She subsequently relocated abroad, focusing on her academic career where she later attained the rank of professor.

Her decision to return, observers say, marks a significant political development in Ogun State, particularly as political actors begin early positioning ahead of the next electoral cycle.

According to Akahi News, the former lawmaker stated that her comeback was not sudden but evolved over time, driven by sustained appeals from groups and individuals who believed she still had a role to play in governance and leadership.

Why APC Over PDP and ADC

Explaining her choice of political platform, Iyabo Obasanjo reportedly ruled out a return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where she previously contested elections, citing internal challenges and instability within the party structure.

She also acknowledged that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was considered during her consultations but noted that the party was still consolidating its structure and did not align with her current political direction.

The former senator said she felt more comfortable within the APC, emphasising that her decision was based on familiarity with political actors within the party and the confidence she felt in working within its framework. She maintained that her decision was not driven by personal animosity towards any individual or political group but by what she described as a practical assessment of her political future.

Political Implications Ahead of 2027

Political analysts believe her entry into the APC could reshape political dynamics in Ogun Central, given her experience in governance and her political background. Observers note that political realignments ahead of major elections often signal early coalition-building and strategic positioning within party structures.

Akahi News learnt that her participation in the APC e-registration exercise in Ibogun, Ward 11, in Ifo Local Government Area, formally confirmed her membership of the ruling party, signalling a clear intention to remain active in the political landscape going forward.

Analysts also point out that the return of established political figures often reinvigorates internal party competition while potentially strengthening party structures at the grassroots level.

Mixed Reactions and Expectations

Her return has generated varied reactions among political stakeholders, with some supporters welcoming her experience and administrative background, while others view the move as part of broader political recalculations ahead of the next election cycle.

Observers noted that the evolving political climate in Ogun State may witness increased engagement among aspirants as parties seek to consolidate influence and mobilise support early.

Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo’s return to partisan politics marks a notable development in Ogun State’s political scene, reflecting the gradual build-up towards the 2027 elections. As political alignments continue to shift, her decision to join the APC is expected to shape conversations around leadership, party dynamics, and future electoral contests in the state.
