In our first reading of today from the Book of Amos 7:10-17, we see the prophet Amos confronted by Amaziah, the priest of Bethel. Amaziah accuses Amos of conspiring against the king and commands him to stop prophesying. However, Amos courageously stands his ground, declaring that he was not a prophet by profession but was called by God to deliver His message. Amos’s unwavering commitment to God’s truth, despite the opposition, is a powerful reminder to us about the importance of staying true to our divine calling and speaking the truth boldly, regardless of the pressures we face.

In our gospel reading of today from Matthew 9:1-8, we witness Jesus healing a paralytic. When Jesus tells the paralytic that his sins are forgiven, some scribes accuse Him of blasphemy. Jesus, knowing their thoughts, challenges their disbelief and then heals the paralytic, demonstrating His authority to forgive sins. This act not only showcases Jesus’s divine power but also highlights the importance of faith and the courage to stand against doubt and skepticism.

These readings together teach us that living a life of truth and righteousness often involves facing opposition and criticism. Amos teaches us to remain steadfast in our mission, regardless of human opposition. Jesus shows us that true authority comes from God, and with faith, we can overcome any challenge.

As we reflect on these passages, let us pray for the strength to stand firm in our faith and the courage to speak and live the truth, no matter the circumstances.
